Abstract:
An experiment was conducted at the farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAIJ),
Dhaka during Aman season in July to December 2011. with a view to study the effect of
submergence on the growth and yield of some rice varieties. The experiment consisted of two
levels of treatments viz.: six varieties where three of them were hybrids and others were
inbreds: BRRI Hybrid dhan3. AC Shankar and lleera-2 (Hybrid) and BRRI dhan34. I3RRI
dhan46 and BRRI dhan5l (Inbred) and four different submergence duration: Control I no
submergence. submergence for 6 days. submergence for 10 days and submergence for 14
days. The experiment was laid out in split plot design with three replications. Experimental
results showed that varieties and submergence individually had significant effect on the
growth and yield parameters like plant height, number of total tiller hill', root, stem, leaf.
panicle and total dry weight (g hilr), chlorophyll content at flag leaf stage, number of
effective tiller hill', paniele length. number of tilled spikelet paniele'. number of unfilled
spikelet panicle4. number of total spikelet panicle4, grain yield (t haj, straw yield (t ha4)
and biological yield (t hi'). Except number of unfilled spikelet panicl&'. highest results for
all growth and yield parameters were recorded from no submergence (control) followed by
the treatment of 6 days submergence while the lowest results were recorded from 14 days
submerged plots. The combined effect of submergence and variety showed significant effect
on growth, yield and yield contributing characters. BRRI dhan5 I followed by 13RRI dhan46
showed lower grain yield reduction percentage in submerged conditions compared to control
by attaining good yield contributing characters and thus proved as tolerant varieties while
BRRI dhan34, Heera-2 and ACI Shankar showed performance indicating towards
susceptibility.
