Abstract:
The overall objective of the present study was to describe the socio-economic
characteristics of boro rice farmers; to estimate the cost and return of Boro rice
production; to determine factors influencing gross return of Boro rice and to identify
the problem faced by the farmers in Boro rice cultivation. Baliakandi upazila under
Rajbari district was selected as the study area and the data were collected from 60
boro rice farmers by using an interview schedule. Data were collected during 1
June
to 30th June, 2019. . After analyzing the data, total cost of production was Tk. 172855
for boro rice cultivars. Per hectare gross return was Tk. 247480. Per hectare gross
margin was Tk. 119475 for boro rice cultivars. Net return was calculated by deducting
gross cost from gross return and these was Tk. 74625. Benefit cost ratio was 1.43 for
boro rice cultivars. From Cobb-Douglas production function analysis, it was observed
that the coefficients of seed, MoP, pesticides and manure cost were significant at
different level of probability for boro rice cultivation and the coefficients of human
labor, land preparation, urea, gypsum, zinc sulphate and irrigation used was not
significant while the coefficients of TSP was negative and insignificant for boro rice
cultivation but coefficients of boron was negatively significant. This study also
identified some of the problems associated with boro rice production. The findings
revealed that low price of boro rice was most severe problem followed by high price
of fertilizers and lack of adequate transportation facilities was last problem of boro
rice production in the study area.
