dc.description.abstract The experiment was conducted at the research farm of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute. Gazipur during October 2008 to March 2009 to evaluate organic manure on the yield of broccoli under integrated nutrient management system. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design having three replications with ten treatments viz. T1 : 100% RD + 2.5 t PM hi', T 2:100% RD + 2.5 t CD hi 1 , T: 100% RD only, 14: 75% RD + 5 t PM ha', T: 75% RD + 5 t CD hi', T6: 75% RD only, T7:50% RD + lOt PM hi', TE: 50% RD + 5 t CD hi', 19: 50% RD only and T, 0: native nutrient (control). The effect of organic manure integrated with inorganic fertilizers on the yield contributing characters and yield of broccoli assessed by the field experiment showed that 100% recommended dose of fertilizer along with 2.5 tPM hi' performed best in most cases e.g. plant height (cm) at initial and final harvesting, number of leaves planf', length of curd (cm), circumference of curd (cm), individual curd weight (g plani') and curd yield. The treatments which received poultry manure with inorganic fertilizers in INM approach produced better results than those of the treatments receiving CD as organic amendments. The longest curd (23.57 cm), maximum circumference of curd (53.30 cm), heaviest individual curd of broccoli (445 g) and maximum curd yield (18.97 t hi') of broccoli was found from 100% RD and 2.5 t PM hi' treated plots which were statistically superior to all other treatments. A significant variation in curd yield hi' of broccoli was found significant in response to different combination of organic and inorganic fertilizer in an integrating approach. Poultry manure showed superiority in most cases over cowdung. Significant differences among the treatments in case of N content and N uptake by broccoli curd were noticed. The treatment, 100% RD and 2.5 t PM hi' contained the highest N, P, K and Zn content which were 4.76% N, 0.60% P, 1.92% K, 1.02% and 55.33ppm Zn, respectively. The same treatment also gave the highest N, P, K, S and Zn uptake which were 94.64, 12.0, 38.17, 20.29 and 0.11 kg hi', respectively. The cowdung amendments along with inorganic fertilizer performed laggard in the treatment series and PM amendments along with inorganic fertilizer showed the pit- eminence in performance. The highest organic matter content (1.44 %) in the post harvest soil of broccoli was found in the treatments of 50% RD along with lot CD hi' followed by the treatment of 50% RD along with 10 t PM hi'. In most of the treatments having N from both the organic and inorganic sources have some residual soil N. The highest amount of total N (0.78%) and the highest amount of residual P (35 pg g 4 ) after harvest was recorded in the treatment of 50% RD along with lOt PM hi'. The highest K status of post harvest soil (0.1 lmeq 100 g1 soil) was recorded in the treatment of RD 50% along with 10 t CD hi'. The K status decreased in all the treatments indicating some mining of K from the native source. The highest Zn content (2.3 pg g') in soil of broccoli was recorded from 75 RD% along with 5 t CD hi'. So, application of poultry manure can supplement a large amount of soil nutrients for the standing crop as well as enrich the soil health providing improved chemical and physical properties. en_US
