Diversified vegetation either naturally grown or planted support the ecosystem
in which roads are constructed anthropogenicaly and perform an essential role
in carbon sequestration as well as climate change mitigation. An importance has
been taken by plantation REDD+ strategies as enlarging carbon sequestration.
Present study was conducted in 2015 for monitoring plant diversity and their
relation to store carbon in both soil and vegetation along the major 9 roadsides
of Dhaka northern city. Shannon-Wiener diversity index (SWI) was used for
plant diversity measurement. Significant positive association was observed
between diversity and richness of plants with both above and below ground
biomass. Species richness and diversity of saplings, herbs and shrubs had
positive correlation (p˂0.05) with carbon storage in both biomass and soils. In
case of Airport road plant diversity, species richness were found top most,
whereas in Technical to Shyamoli roadside had negative affect on plant
diversity and carbon storage. Intensive plantation in Airport roadside affected
carbon storage positively. Conclusively, effectiveness of vegetation, texture,
nutrient status, history of the place had significant effect on carbon storage.
Therefore, it is an evident that roadside plantation is an essential procedure of
carbon sequestration and consequently turning a city to be transformed into
more suitable and healthier for living and thus help to mitigate climate change. |
