Abstract:
objective of this study was to find out the extent of use of Integrated Pest
Management (IPM) practices in rice field by the farmers and to determine the
relationship between the selected characteristics of the fanners and their use ofIPM
practices. The study was conducted in four villages under Tapodhan union of
Rangpur sadar upazila. 100 fanners were selected as the respondents of the study
randomly out of 1007 fanners. Data collected from the respondents using an
interview schedule during April] to April 30, 2006. Descriptive statistics such as
mean, standard deviation, range and percentage were used to describe the variables
under consideration. Pearson's Product Moment Correlation Coefficient (r) was
used to explore the relationship between the selected characteristics of the farmers
and their use of IPM practices. The data shown that only 82 percent of the farmers
were high users while 10 percent medium and 8 percent of the respondents were
low users of IPM practices respectively. Among fourteen selected lPM practices,
"Cross-bar use in the field to facilitate to sit the birds" ranked first and U'Tocontrol
pest, use of pesticides as a last measurement" ranked last. The findings further
revealed that use of IPM practices by the farmers had significant relationship with
their education, annual income, contact with extension sources, organizational
participation, innovativeness, knowledge on lPM and cosmopoliteness. On the
