Brinjal (Solanum melongena L.) is one of the most important vegetable crops
in terms of both acreage and production in Bangladesh and widely cultivated
throughout the country. The experiment was carried out during the period from
March to October 2006 at Sher-c-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka Lo
find out the effect of organic manures and different levels of nitrogen on the
growth and yield of brinjal. There were three nitrogen levels, No (control): No
nitrogen, N1: 100 kg nitrogen/ha and N2: 150 kg nitrogen/ha and three different
treatments of manures; Mo (Control): No manure, M
I 0 ton cowdung /ha and
M2: 3 ton poultry litter/ha. The experiment was laid out in a randomized
complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Increasing the dose or
nitrogen increased the plant height, number of leaves, days Lo first flowering,
number of flower, number of fruit, length and diameter or fruit, weight or
x
1:
individual fruit, total yield of fruit per plant and number of fruit per plant. Plan!
height (45.18 cm), number of leaves (93.0), length ( 13.70) and diameter of fruit
(4.0), number of fruit per plant ( 17.8), weight of individual fruit (88.92 g) and
total weight of fruit per plant (1602. I g) was the highest in M1• M1 gave the
highest yield than M2 and Mo (control). The combined effect or M1 and N~
produced the highest yield (30.20 ton/ha) of brinjal. Maximizing the yield or
brinjal besides organic manures inorganic fertilizer (nitrogen) needed to be
