<title>EFFECT OF COVID-19 PANDEMIC ON MARKET PRICE OF CHICKEN AND CHICKEN PRODUCTS IN BANGLADESH</title>

The study aims to investigate how the COVID/19 pandemic has impacted the price of&#13;
chicken and chicken products. The current study was conducted using secondary data&#13;
collected from a relevant online database of poultry news portals. Data from one year&#13;
were collected of which six months were from the pre-COVID period (JulyDecember/2019)&#13;
&#13;
and six months from the COVID period (July-December/2020). A&#13;
structural questionnaire was prepared to collect the market price of chicken and&#13;
chicken products from eight divisions of Bangladesh. To collect the data 4 days of the&#13;
month were considered randomly taking a day from each week. Total (4 days x 6&#13;
months x 8 divisions) 192 days of data were collected taking 48 days each from preCOVID&#13;
and&#13;
COVID&#13;
periods.&#13;
Therefore,&#13;
the&#13;
plan&#13;
was&#13;
to&#13;
collect&#13;
a&#13;
total&#13;
of&#13;
(192x2)&#13;
384&#13;
&#13;
days&#13;
of&#13;
data&#13;
for&#13;
the&#13;
study.&#13;
The&#13;
results&#13;
showed&#13;
that&#13;
the&#13;
average&#13;
wholesale&#13;
price&#13;
of&#13;
live&#13;
&#13;
birds&#13;
&#13;
(Broiler chicken, culled white chicken and Sonali chicken), Shell eggs (Brown&#13;
and White) and Day-Old-Chicks (Brown, White layer and Broiler chicks) fluctuated&#13;
due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but no significant (p&gt;0.05) difference was found in&#13;
prices except live culled red chicken. The average wholesale price of culled red&#13;
chicken in Chattogram was 171.12±19.67 from July to December 2019 and&#13;
195.34±35.70 from July to December 2020. In Khulna and Rajshahi the wholesale&#13;
price of brown shell eggs decreased whereas in Dhaka, Barishal and Chattogram the&#13;
price was upward, but it remained unchanged in Mymensingh, Sylhet and Rangpur&#13;
during the COVID pandemic. The wholesale price of white shell eggs in Dhaka,&#13;
Khulna and Rajshahi showed decreasing trend during the pandemic but increased in&#13;
Chattogram. The wholesale price of white layer chicks was lowered by 21.43Tk,&#13;
23.79Tk and 31.03Tk in the COVID period than the pre-COVID period in Dhaka,&#13;
Barishal and Rangpur, whereas minor price fluctuation was observed in brown layer&#13;
and broiler chicks. The wholesale price of Sonali chicks was 15.67±3.50 in Rangpur&#13;
during the pandemic. The study concluded that the COVID-19 pandemic had a&#13;
negative impact on the poultry industry.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has emerged as a global public health concern and it&#13;
is directly linked to the use of antibiotics by livestock farmers especially poultry and&#13;
dairy farmers. This study was conducted to assess the current situation of Knowledge,&#13;
Attitude and Practices (KAP) of farmers regarding antimicrobial use (AMU) in&#13;
poultry farms in Cumilla district of Bangladesh. Information of farmers was collected&#13;
in a pre-structured questionnaire and chi-square test was used to examine&#13;
relationships between knowledge, attitude and practice. The findings indicated that&#13;
farmers had a little knowledge about on AMR and ethical use of antibiotics. Majority&#13;
of the farmers showed positive attitude towards use of antibiotics. However, practices&#13;
regarding AMU were poor among the poultry farmers. The study also demonstrated&#13;
that layer farmers had better idea about antibiotics and had a good practice compared&#13;
to broiler farmers. The gap in the knowledge and attitude of the farmer’s regarding&#13;
AMU could be a potential factor of AMR. Further study can help build a more&#13;
accurately address the situation and help build a correct pathway to combat AMR.

The Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) and Maximum Permitted Concentration&#13;
(MPC) of heavy metals in food chain are the cardinal key point for recent time of food&#13;
safety even human health. Unfortunately, there are not sufficient data and study on&#13;
this area of Dhaka city that is why this study has designed. In this study, the&#13;
concentrations of heavy metals, such as Cr, Cd, Pb and Cu, in poultry feed, meat and&#13;
egg have addressed. The safeties for human consumption by Recommended RDA and&#13;
MPC have been investigated in this study. As a result, the sampling is done from&#13;
various location of Savar upazilla focusing point to our study. A total of 20 feed&#13;
sample and 20 meat samples and 20 eggs sample were chosen from the different feed&#13;
brand and farm. A total of 60 elemental samples for Cr, Pb, Cd, and Cu in poultry&#13;
feed, meat and egg were analysis in laboratory. The results indicated that there were&#13;
significant levels of most of the trace elements and heavy metals in the different feed&#13;
samples. But, the levels were below MPC in most cases. The layer and broiler ready&#13;
feed samples found safe from those elements. The heavy metal contents (Cr, Cd, Pb &amp;&#13;
Cu) of all the tested samples in meat and egg samples were found negative.&#13;
Differences in most of the trace and toxic elements among the different sources of&#13;
meat and eggs were not found to be significant. Differences between the broiler meat&#13;
and table eggs were only substantial for Fe and Zn. Fe was significantly higher in&#13;
meat than in eggs, and the opposite trend was found for Zn. Heavy metals (Cr, Pb, Cd,&#13;
and Cu) were not detected in the  meat or eggs, indicating no risks from these toxic&#13;
elements. The impact of negative result in meat and egg samples suspected reasons are&#13;
liver metabolic activities which detoxified the heavy metals and poultry dropping&#13;
bypass the metals contents or elemental metal cannot penetrate cells wall for&#13;
metabolism. In conclusion, the poultry farmers are suggested to buy poultry feeds&#13;
from the reputed feed company and discourage to use loose feeds. Moreover, feed&#13;
marketing channel particularly loose feed marketing should be monitored properly by&#13;
the regulatory authority Thus, chicken meat and table eggs, which are primary protein&#13;
sources, are safe sources of human nourishment.

The Escherichia coli are a pathogen that is enteropathogenic and causes infection to&#13;
human and animal sector. It is also a food safety and sanitary indicator. This study was&#13;
conducted to investigate the E. coli from table chicken egg in Mohammadpur area from&#13;
January to June 2022. A total of 100 egg samples were collected from different kitchen&#13;
market of Mohammadpur. Bacteria were isolated &amp; identified based on the colony&#13;
charactetistics in different media, staining properties and microscopic observation. The&#13;
colony characteristics of E. coli were greenish red colored with faint metallic sheen in&#13;
EMB agar and whitish colored in Nutrient agar media. The E. coli observed in rod&#13;
shaped, gram negative, single or paired arranged under microscope stained with gram's&#13;
stain. In physical parameter the prevalence of brown with red spotted color, oval shaped,&#13;
irregular shaped, cracked, leaked, dirty were 25,% 26.67%, 0%, 0%, 10%, 20%,&#13;
respectively. The higher prevalence of brown with oval shaped was 26.67% and lower&#13;
prevalence of leaked egg was 10%. The prevalence of Townhall, Agargoan, Paka Market,&#13;
Krishi Market, Bihari Camp were 15%, 30%, 0, 10% &amp; 20%, respectively. The higher&#13;
prevalence of Agargaon was 30% and no positive case found in Paka Market. &#13;
