A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF SOCIO-ECONOMIC STATUS BETWEEN ETHNIC (GARO) COMMUNITY AND MAINSTREAM PEOPLE OF BANGLADESH.
ANANDA, KRISHNA KRIPA
The study aimed to know the socio-economic status of Garo community in comparison
to mainstream people. Nalitabari upazila under Sherpur district of Bangladesh has been
selected as a case study area situated in the east border area of Bangladesh where the
indigenous Garo people are living. For eras, the Garo’s have been the “Adivasies” of
Bangladesh who maintained Sanatani religion. Today almost all the Garo people
practice Christianity. Forty-two ethnic households & forty three respondents from
mainstream people were selected randomly for data collection. Primary data were
collected from a set of structured questionnaires containing 23 questions to know their
socio-cultural status. Specially, the discussion was made with old age witty people of
the ethnic as well as secondary data were obtained through reading various tribal
magazines and history. From the observation, this study observed that socio-economic
condition of the tribal is getting better day by day. Though there are some problems
having in the area like poor communication, unemployment, lac of electricity, social
security and land conflict with mainstream people. But primary health and income status
are found improved enough as well as socio-cultural bonding with in ethnic is very
strong. From the study I found the following observations regarding Garo community
& mainstream people. (a) Possession of land among Garo community is much lower
than the mainstream people. Reasons might be these as Garo community is not well
aware about the legal procedures. Moreover, mainstream people have been engulfing
them gradually with the help of administrative and political influences. (b) The Garo
community people are higher in migratory works so that monthly income of them is
also higher in some cases. (c) Also the Garo community lags far behind than the
mainstream people in case of level of education and socio-political involvement
accompanied by a difficulties during receiving govt. aids because of ignorance as they
are Garo. (d) Most of the time the Garo people are forced to work with a lower wage
because of the unfair socio-economic environment. (e) Garo people have much positive
feeling about mainstream people.

IMPACT OF MICROFINANCE ON WOMEN EMPOWERMENT IN SOME SELECTED AREAS OF LUXMIPUR DISTRICT

IMPACT OF MICROFINANCE ON WOMEN EMPOWERMENT IN SOME SELECTED AREAS OF LUXMIPUR DISTRICT
FATEMA, KANIZ
The aim of this thesis to understand the impact of microfinance on women
empowerment. As they are the half in number of our total population. Without their
empowerment, we can‟t think the ultimate development of our society as well as our
country. The impact of microfinance on women‟s empowerment remains debated. While
some studies suggest that microfinance helps women increase their income earning
abilities, leading to greater power within the household, others argue that men often take
control over the credit and income which was allocated to women, leading to a more
vulnerable position within the household for women. This paper evaluates the impact of
microfinance on women‟s empowerment in rural Bangladesh. The data were collected via
a questionnaire that was conducted on a field study in the district of Luxmipure in
Bangladesh. Only primary data were collected for this study. The survey method was
followed for data collection. SPSS software was used to analyzed the collected data.
Furthermore, the impact of microfinance on women‟s empowerment is examined through
women empowerment index (WEI), which describes us the status of women
empowerment through different descriptive statistics. From the study we can find that the
women empowerment index of all respondents is 3.47 which is moderate value of index,
the value describe still in our rual area women don‟t have that much power of making
decision about economic, social and political isuues. Women can take loan from various
government and non government organization but most of the time they are not the real
user of that money. Their husband or son take all the decision about use of loan. On the
other hand if they use the loan for their business they can‟t save money without
husband‟s concern. So we need more awear about women empowerment activities. Now,
if we tell about the microfinancing institution, they also have huge problem specially for
women such as high rate of interest, lack of desirable loan, lace of easy process of loan,
lack of digital payment system, weekly installment etc. The study also recommends
some policy to solve these problems. Both government and responsible authorities also
need to work together to make the processes easy and secure.

AMIN, MD. RUHUL
The objectives of this study were to describe the selected characteristics of the women;
to determine the level of empowerment of women through microfinance. The study was
conducted in Shibganj upazilla under Bogura District. Data were collected by using
interview schedule from the randomly selected 80 respondents during 1
November to
30
th
December, 2019. Multiple regression model was used in the study. The higher
proportion 52.5 percent of the women had medium empowerment; while 26.25 percent
of the women had low empowerment and 21.25 percent of the women had high
empowerment through microfinance program. Among selected characteristics of the
respondent’s viz. number of loan-taking purposes, age, education, annual family
income, credit received and decision-making ability of the respondents had significant
positive contribution with their empowerment. Loan repayment period was very short
and was the 1
st
problem followed by high rate of interest and lack of intention to serve
in the apparently inaccessibly location was the last problem. So, the policy makers
should consider these important factors to increase women empowerments.

PROFITABILITY OF BORO RICE CULTIVATION IN THE SELECTED AREAS OF NARAIL DISTRICT IN BANGLADESH

The purpose of the study was to identify the major socio-economic characteristics of
the boro rice farmers; to assess the profitability of boro rice production farmers; and
to identify problem faced by the farmers in rice boro production. The study was
undertaken purposively in Lohagar upazila under Norail district. Validated and wellstructured

interview schedule (questionnaire) was used to collect data from 95 rice
cultivars during 1st January, 2020 to 1
st
February, 2020. Per hectare gross return of
boro rice cultivation under small, medium and large farms were Tk. 119120, Tk.
116900 and Tk. 115040, respectively. Gross margin was found to be Tk. 67081, Tk.
62543 and Tk. 59036 per hectare for small, medium and large boro rice farm,
respectively. Total net return were estimated as Tk. 35180, Tk. 34126 and Tk. 29336
for small, medium and large boro rice farm per hectare, respectively. Benefit Cost
Ratio (BCR) were found to be 1.15, 1.13 and 1.08 for small, medium and large rice
farm, respectively. Cobb-Douglas production function analysis was carried out for
examining the factors affecting the profitability of input use. In most of the cases the
coefficients of irrigation, cost of land preparation, human labor cost, cost of manure
and cost of pesticide appeared to be positive significant except the negative and
significant effect of seed cost and cost of TSP. The values of the coefficient of
multiple determination of boro rice production were 0.92 which implied that about 92
percent of the total variation in the gross return could be explained by the included
explanatory variables of the model. Lack of fertilizer during cultivation time was the
l
st
problem and lack of storage facility was ranked the last.
