Executive Summary
SAU Perilla-1 (Golden Perilla BD) is a latest oil crop variety enriched with Omega-3 fatty
acid, which is introduced by Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University in 2021. The seed
contains ⁓40% edible oil and is recommended for growing in Kharif-2 season when no oil
crop is grown in Bangladesh. However, for Robi seasonal trail, the crop was sown on 21
November (D1), 28 November (D2), 05 December (D3), and 12 December (D4) with 40 cm
× 40 cm (S1), 40 cm × 30 cm (S2), and 40 cm × 20cm (S3) planting configurations
maintained in each of the dates. The research was aimed mainly on thermal effects on
phenological parameters (germination, flowering and biological yields) as evaluated by the
Growing Degree Days (GDD) and Heat Use Efficiency (HUE) over stover yield and grain
yield of SAU Perilla-1. The results revealed that sowing dates had significant effect on the
yield variations as evaluated by the studied parameters of the crop. However, D2 showed the
uppermost level of seed weight per plant. The highest seed weight per plant was recorded
due to the effect of S3 and that of the value touched at the bottom for S2. The maximum
seed weight was recorded in D2S3 and that of the lowest was found in D4S3. The GDD
values increased with increasing days to germination of seeds. Sowing date strongly
influenced the GDD requirement for germination of SAU Perilla-1. When the crop was sown
on D1, 75 days were needed accumulating 1670.4℉ for flowering of the crop. The GDD
requirement was highest (1802℉) in D4 sowing treatment, when 82 days were required to
initiate flowering. The GDD requirement declined as sown on D2 and D3 dates. The results
indicated that the variation in temperature prevailed under different dates of sowing. HUE
was higher in producing stover plant when sown on 21
st
November (D1) with second highest
grain production (4.10 mg/plant/℉/Day). Contrary to that the highest HUE for grain (8.13
mg/plant/℉/Day) was yielded in D2 sowing date although the stover production was reduced
from that of D1 treatment found. When sowing is delayed, either of grain and stover
synthesis were lowered down as found in D3 and D4 treatments.

Executive Summary
An experiment was conducted in the research field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University,
Dhaka 1207 during the period from July, 2022 to November, 2022 to find out the effect of
different organic manure and levels of inorganic fertilizer on growth, yield and oil content of
SAU Perilla-1. The experiment comprised of two factors viz. Factor A: Organic manure – 5
(Main plot)- i. OM
0
= Control, ii. OM
1
= Cowdung, iii. OM
2
= Vermicompost, iv. OM
=
Decomposed rice straw and v. OM
= Poultry litter; Factor B: Fertilizer Level - 4 (Sub
Plot)- i. F
0
= No fertilizer (Control), ii. F
4
= 75% Recommended dose of fertilizers (RDF),
iii. F
2
= 100% RDF and iv. F
4
1
= 125% RDF. The experiment was laid out in a split plot
design with three replications. Data were collected on different aspects of growth, yield
attributes and yield of perilla. Results revealed that Poultry litter (OM
(OM
2
) gave the highest grain yield (1385.7 and 1249.2 kg ha
-1
4
) and vermicompost
, respectively) which may be
attributed to the highest number of branches plant
-1
, seeds branch
-1
and 1000 seed weight in
these organic manure treatments (OM
4
and OM
). These two treatments also resulted with
the highest oil percentages. Considering chemical fertilizer treatments, F
2
(125% higher than
recommended dose of fertilizer) showed the highest seed yield (1323.4 kg ha
4
) but seed
yield (1304.1 kg ha
-1
) from F
(Recommended dose of fertilizer) was not statistically
different from F
4
2
treatment. These two treatments (F
4
and

F
) showed the highest and
statistically similar number of branches plant
-1
, seeds branch
-1
2
and 1000 seed weight. Oil
percentage (33.71 and 33.20%, respectively) also found higher in F
4
and F
treatments.
Regarding the combined effects of organic manure and chemical fertilizer, the Poultry litter
+125% higher than recommended dose of fertilizer (OM
4
× F
) was shown up the highest
values of parameters (Branches plant
-1
. Seeds branch
-1
3
, 1000 seed weight, seed yield and oil
percentage) under study. However, OM
4
× F
3
and

OM
4
× F
3
also showed
similar results with
OM
4
× F
3

. Considering the above results, poultry litter or vermicompost coupled with
recommended dose of fertilizer may be suggested to cultivate SAU Perilla-1 for achieving
higher seed yield and oil percentage in our country.

OPTIMIZING PLANTING CONFIGURATION FOR LOCAL MAIZE VARIETIES OF THE HILLY AREAS OF BANGLADESH
Ullah, Md. Jafar
Executive Summary:The study was made at the Dighinala Upazilla of Khagrachori district during the Rabi season of 2022-23 to evaluate the performance of different pre-selected improved local maize varieties under varying planting configurations. Treatments comprised three planting configurations such as S50 (row to row distance 50 cm), S60 (row to row distance 60 cm) and S70 (row to row distance 70 cm) and eight varieties, namely V1 (YellowWhiteGrey), V2 (BlackRed), V3 (Black), V4 (PurplePink), V5 (CopperRed), V6 (GreyWhite), V7 (White) and V8 (Red). Results showed that varieties, planting configuration and also their interactions had significant effect on plant height, number of leaves per plant, leaf area, dry weight, cob number weight per plant, grain weight and harvest index. The variety treatment V6 showed significantly the highest grain yield per hectare (5.565 t) which however, was not significantly higher than those of V2, V4, V5 and V7. The planting configuration S70 had the maximum grain yield per hectare (5.217 t) which was statistically at par with that of S60 (5.017 t). The variety treatment V1 produced the lowest grain yield (4.607 t). The interaction treatment V6S70 had the highest grain yield per hectare (5.713 t) which was not significantly higher than those of V5S70 and V6S60. The highest grain yield of V6S70 interaction was attributed to the highest grain yield per plant (95.87 g) and significantly higher harvest index of this treatment. However, the variety Gray White (V6) grown at row distance of 70 cm may not perform in other areas of the hill districts. So, the trial needs to be repeated in other areas of the hill districts.
